However, keep in mind that every manufacturer’s warranty will not be the same. 

So once you get the breakdown of your specific manufacturer’s warranty, read it thoroughly to ensure you understand what’s covered and what’s not.

The Nitty Gritty

Many manufacturers offer a one-year limited warranty that covers normal wear and tear on a home.

If the house is used for business or commercial purposes, that one-year will be reduced to 60 days.

Also keep in mind that should you relocate your home or sell, the warranty does not transfer to a new location or homeowner.


Structural lapses are defects not visible to the naked eye.

Some examples of structural issues include plumbing or large scale electrical issues and failure of wood built structure of the home. 

This falls into the one year limited warranty coverage, so if at any point during your first year, you notice something not looking right. You’re covered!



Cosmetics are generally defined as defects seen or noticeable by the naked eye. 

You’ll have 30-60 days (depending on your specific warranty) to live in the home and document what is not up to par.

This will include loose trim, drywall cracks, carpet/flooring faults, electrical outlets/switches not working, etc.

It’s recommended that you start a list and once you’re nearing the end of your warranted time.

After you’ve compiled your list, make the call to the manufacturer to report any issues.

This saves you and the manufacturer from having to make several trips and disrupting your daily life in your new dream home.


A great perk about your new home is that all the appliances are brand new!

This means no crusty mess from someone before you!

Because these appliances are new, they also come with warranties, so if anything goes wrong during your time of coverage, again, you’re covered.

This most frequently refers to the furnace, water heater, refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher.

It’s important that you keep all your owner manuals and warranty information together, so when life does decide to throw you a curveball, you can lay your hands on the important information quickly.



No one wants to find out their warranty has been voided because of some fun customization made to make it feel more like YOUR unique home.

But, manufacturers have guidelines set in place to protect them, as well as you.

  • Additions to the home not through manufacturer approved licensed contractors (add-ons, garages, porches, etc.)

  • Used for rental purposes

When in doubt, call your manufacturer before making any big changes, just to be sure you’re not voiding your warranty.
